ANYONE FOR RUGBY?

One of our young male
Leaders who has a big interest in sport (particularly rugby). This
Leader prior to acquiring a disability played rugby and is frustrated at
the lack of sporting options available to people with disabilities in
Donegal. He has been fortunate in having had the opportunity to play
rugby during time spent in Dublin, but cannot continue this passion home
in Donegal. During our conversation I agreed to put the idea of a
Donegal Rugby Team for people with disabilities out there to our
Leaders, and those of you that may know someone that may get involved.
Our interested Leader has got the commitment of one of the head
organisers in Dublin to come down and talk to us about setting up a
team, if we have the numbers interested. If you feel like getting
involved at any level, be it coaching, playing, managing or at
organisational level, please contact me immediately.

DR. JAMES McDAID T.D. OFFICIALLY
OPENS NEW DCIL OFFICES
The new offices of the Donegal Centre for
Independent Living at McCaul House,
Pearse Rd., Letterkenny were officially opened on Monday 12th May by Dr.
James McDaid T.D., who covered for newly promoted Tanaiste Mary Coughlan
because of her recent promotion she had to rearrange her schedule.
There was a good gathering at the event, which also included the opening
of Annemaire’s Library, in memory of former DCIL Chairperson Annmarie
O’Dwyer who passed away in January this year, her parents Benda and Tom
travelled from Co Carlow to do the honours, and also coinciding with
event was the official opening of this Website.
training
of Leaders and PAS
DCIL will this year embark on further
training of both Leaders and PAS. We are currently in the process of
recruiting a part time Training/Support Co-ordinator. We plan on
providing this training in three locations throughout Donegal to help
reduce the travelling issues for people attending. I take this early
opportunity to ask Leaders and PAS. for their support and participation
in the training. It is vital to the success of a PA service for both
parties involved to receive training. The training days also provides
the opportunity for PAS and Leaders to meet others, which provides a
network within what can otherwise be very isolated roles for PAS and
Leaders.
DCIL
ANNUAL GENErAL meeting.
The
AGM of the Donegal Centre for Independent Living will
take place on Tuesday 16th September 2008 at the Cheshire Apartments,
Long Lane, Letterkenny, beginning 2.30 p.m.
DCIL is facilitating over 100 people with
disabilities throughout the county to live independently within their
community by providing a range of services, the principle one being the
Personal Assistance Service.
The PA Service has transformed the lives of
users and is the cornerstone of the Independent Living movement,
however, many with physical/sensory disabilities in County Donegal have
been assessed, and qualify, for the service but DCIL are unable to help
them due to Government underfunding; this is causing undue hardship and
denying these people their right to live as equal citizens. No doubt
this issue causes serious concerns and will be high on the AGM agenda.
Despite the immediate concern above the Donegal Centre for Independent
Living had a very busy and successful year with the official opening of
their new offices at Unit 7. McCaul Hse., Pearse Rd., Letterkenny by
Dr James McDaid T.D., the launching of donegalcil.com, and AnneMarie’s
Library, to mention but a few.
DCIL is appealing for a full turn out at
the AGM, it’s vital that everyone availing of our services have an
input into the running of the company - be an active member and plan to
attend.
